What a tuition centre website actually costs in Malaysia

Nobody in this market publishes a price, so comparing quotes is guesswork. Here are the real bands, what each one buys, and the question to ask before you pay anyone.

Almost nobody in this market publishes a price. You ask, you get a form, then a call, then a quote, and by then you have spent two weeks and still cannot compare one vendor with another. So here are the real bands, what each one actually buys, and where I sit.

The three price bands

RM500 – RM1,500

Template tier

A stock template reused across many clients. Typically one to five pages, a basic contact form, minimal search setup. The work is real but the design is not yours, and the same layout is running for a dozen other businesses.

RM3,000 – RM8,000

The SME band

Custom design, eight to fifteen pages, pages mapped to the terms people actually search, proper heading structure, WhatsApp buttons and enquiry forms. This is where most Malaysian small-business projects land.

RM12,000 – RM30,000

Mid-tier agency

Custom design with a content management system and integrations, usually with a monthly retainer of RM1,500 to RM5,000 on top. Full e-commerce and bespoke platforms run from RM30,000 upward.

Freelancers in Malaysia generally quote RM1,500 to RM8,000 for a standard business site, or RM80 to RM300 an hour. Entry-level agency work starts around RM5,000 to RM12,000 and is often templated anyway.

The costs that are not in the quote

A build price is a one-off. Two things recur, and they are small but they never stop:

RM30 – RM70A domain name, per year. A .my domain sits at the upper end of that.
RM11 – RM50Shared hosting, per month, at the usual providers.
RM200 – RM1,500Security and certificates per year, if your vendor charges separately for them.
RM680 – RM3,020A common first-year all-in figure for a small business site in Malaysia.

A static site like the ones I build has no database and no software to keep patched, so it can run on free hosting indefinitely. That removes the monthly line entirely and leaves you paying for the domain and nothing else.

The trap in the cheap tier

At the RM500 to RM1,500 end, the domain is frequently registered in the vendor's name rather than yours. It reads as a convenience. It is not. It means that when you want to move, you are negotiating for your own address, and some vendors know exactly what that is worth to you.

Check this before you pay anyone, including me. Ask one question: whose name is on the domain registration, and can I log in to the registrar myself? If the answer is anything other than “yours, and yes”, you are renting your own address.

The same applies to the site files. If your vendor holds everything and hands you nothing, then leaving means starting over, and the quote for your second website is really the quote for your first one again.

What I charge, and why it is where it is

Every price on the main page is published and is the whole price for that job. The enrolment page package is RM1,800. The Google listing fix, for centres whose real problem is findability rather than the website, is RM600.

That sits above the template tier and below the SME band, which is deliberate. You are not getting a reused template, because each page is built for the one centre. You are also not getting an agency, a project manager, or a retainer, because there is one person here and the work is a fixed scope with an end date.

I am a university student in Kuala Lumpur doing this alone. Not an agency, not SSM registered. That is the honest reason the price is what it is, and you should weigh it rather than ignore it.

The objection worth taking seriously

The standard warning about hiring one person is single point of failure: if that person disappears after launch, your site becomes difficult or impossible to update without starting again. It is a fair warning and it is the right question to ask me.

My answer is structural rather than reassuring. What you get handed is plain HTML and CSS with no framework, no content system and no build step, hosted on infrastructure in your own account, with the domain registered in your name. Any competent developer can open those files and work on them. There is nothing proprietary to be locked out of and no licence that lapses.

That is not a promise that I will always be around. It is the arrangement that makes it not matter very much if I am not.

How to compare quotes without a spreadsheet

Every price I charge is published.

No quote needed to find out what something costs. If your problem turns out to be your Google listing rather than your website, I will tell you that instead.
